For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”Study notes
The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
Explanation
James and John asked for places of honour (10:35-40). Jesus teaches that greatness in His kingdom means serving others (10:42-44). He Himself is the example. A ransom was a price paid to set someone free.
Theology
Jesus describes His death as a ransom: He gives His life to set many free. This verse is central to Christian teaching about the purpose of the cross.
